Explain who your group members are?
In my group there are four members, Me, Harry Hyett, Jazz Chrystie and Benjamin Yarwood.
Explain what you discussed in your first meeting?
In our first meeting we discussed what songs we was thinking of using for music video, chose a song that we are going to use, then also we printed off our lyrics and annotated them top see the main themes of the song are, for example relationships. In this meeting we discussed why we would use each song and the song we chose had the most positives such as interesting lyrics and how we could create an interesting music video from looking at the lyrics.
Discussion of A3 paper and ideas gathered. (also take a picture of the A3 paper, to show as evidence and upload this to your blog)
From the ideas gathered we have got an idea of what we will include in our video such as codes and conventions. Moving forward to the next meeting (applying for copyright, researching the chosen music genre and starting to consider the outline of the music video).
In the next meeting we will be looking at applying for copyright to use the chosen song, we will also be researching our chosen music genre, this will be useful as it could influence our ideas of what to include in our own video. We will also consider the basic outline of our music video.
Group meetings and discussions
·Individual
feedback from the individual analysis of the chosen music genre and ideas
gathered
We individually analysed the chosen music genre, I knew the genre before the decision to choose the song to make a music video for it so I had an understanding of what the genre is like and what are popular conventions in the genre. I noticed that the main conventions of the genre are bright colours and tints on the music video, this relates to the audience and the themes of phsycedlic drugs that are linked to the genre of phsycedlic rock. Other conventions are that there is more of a narrative and concept base fr videos in the genre and the performance side of a music video isn't as important to the audience.
·Discussion
and ideas of the outline of the music video
We discussed what we wanted our music video to be like and started to discuss possible narrative bases for the music video and the first starting scene that we all agreed on and liked was the start and helped us build the rest of the narrative for the music video. We decided to use different editing styles such as time lapse and different range of camera angles and shots to keep the video interesting for our audience.
·Storyboards,
planning the production (camera, editing, image, MES) and filming the
production
When we agreed on a basic narrative we made our storyboards which were made for the filming process and to put our ideas on paper during the filming we didn't follow the storyboards 100% but the were useful and necessary to get the narrative written down. The storyboards also let us put down the editing styles and specific mise-en-scene was going to be using for each shot. Meetings and discussions I feel that group meetings and discussions are important as they let us track our progress in the meetings and look at what we have discussed and what we haven't discussed so we know what to have a meeting about. They also allow us to do tasks together as we have organised what tasks we have to do and when to do it so we can arrange to work together on tasks.
Lorde- Royals. This is a very popular music video, it has elements of performance, narrative and concept. This video is inspirational as it is recognised as a good video for its genre, so there are elements that could be translated into our own video, such as the close ups of the artist performing, these different cinematography styles will help us in our music video as I can see some that I might want to implement in our own, these range of camera angles will benefit the narrative of our music video and create a relationship between the artist and the audience. This video represents the artist in a positive way as the fans know who she is and she will be able to grow her personal image and create a fan base.
Music video 2-
Kanye west- All falls down. This music video provided inspiration as it was a music video that showed me an unconventional way of making a music video, the elements of first person view was different and could be looked at for our own music video. The performance and concept elements in this video were also unique and overall this video has provided inspiration to me and I feel that if I used this inspirtation in my own music video it would benefit the quality of it as the concept would fit the conventions of any possible genre we choose which could be strongly concept based. The genre of this video is not in the genre that we will choose but it still had some unconventional features that allow the audience to tell it apart from usual hip-hop videos. It also represents the artist well as it shows his lifestyle, the narrative of this music video is mixed with the performance well and the music video is entertaining, this mix would be good to include in my music video as it doesn't focus on one sole element.
Music video 3-
Jake Bugg- Theres a beast and we all feed it. This video was inspiration to me as it was made to be very unconventional to other genres videos like pop, and also different to his own genre, there wasn't much of a narrative or any performance, the concept was just to show clips of different people doing strange things, the video doesn't follow an of Goodwins theory either. This is inspirational to me as it shows that unconventional videos can still be entertaining. This video is more relateable to our group as we might choose a song in the wide genre of rock, which Indie is under which this video is for. This will help me to realise what other rock videos can be like.
Daniel Bedingfield- Gotta get thru this.
I took some inspiration from this music video as the editing styles are slow for most of the music video but there is occasional use of fast paced editing when there is an action scene. This is what we want to include in our music video as it will show the performance side well like in this video but also have some action that will engage the audience as well. Also the location of this video is in some of the locations we could use so the editing style will be easily relate able.
Foster the people- Coming of age.
This video has a good use of colour tints that would be conventional of our genre so we have taken some inspiration and are looking at including colour tints through out or video to engage the audience and make our music video conventional to the genre. Also the time lapse is a feature of editing in this music video that is good and effective so I feel that including that would be good in our own music video.
List 3 artists or songs that I would consider making a music video for and that I will share with my Group are Tame Impala- It fees like we only go backwards, Jake Bugg- Theres a beast and we all feed it, and Clean Bandit- Extraordinary.
1)Introduction Explain what the copyright law is and how it is used within the music
industry
"Copyright is a legal right created by the law of a country, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, with the intention of enabling the creator (e.g. the photographer of a photograph or the author of a book) to receive compensation for their intellectual effort." what this means for music artists and record labels is that they can put a copyright on their song so other people cannot make money from their song by copying it. This saves the record label and artist money as their song cant be sold by someone else, this gives them the full profit, which is why music copyright is so important.
2)Applying for copyright 1) Explain why you had to apply for copyright
I have had to apply for copyright right for the use of this song for when we make a music video for it. We had to do this as the record label might have had a problem with us uploading our version of the music video to Youtube, this is what our intention is so if we tell them what we are going to do, they can give us permission to use the song in our video and upload it to youtube, this will save us problems like the video being taken down from youtube if we didn't have permission.
2) Discuss in detail what you did. Identify the record label, email, phone, etc
(step by step account)
First we had to find the record labels contact details, so we went onto Tame Impala's official website and there was contact information for their record label The record label for the UK was 'U Music' which is a subsidiary company of Universal records. We then E-mailed the contact for the UK, which asked for permission to use the song in our music video.
3) Response- did you get a response from the record label, how many times did
you contact them, are you still awaiting a response?
We only contacted the record label once and they responded, granting us permission to use the song and make our own video for it and to upload it to Youtube, this is good as we can now use the song we wanted without getting into trouble for it. This will help with the planning of our music video as we know we can plan without the possibility of having to change to different song after planning because the record label rejected our request late, this means we can be on schedule with the production of our music video.
3)Include
a copy of the email that you sent the record company
Intro – Explain why artists may feel the need to reinvent themselves Some artists feel that they need to re invent themselves they do this as they feel it will have a positive impact on there careers, this is because that if an artist changes their style they will get a larger audience especially if they are making music with a larger target audience, this will increase the artists revenue. The artist could be changing genres to be more creative, and they want to make music they like, this would be the reason for Snoop dog who changed his name to snoop Lion and started making a different genre of music. Miley Cyrus may have felt that she needed to re-invent herself as she grew up being an actress on the Disney channel, this means that people and her fans associate her with that, so to get away from the label of being an actress she needed to make her own brand edgy and unique, this makes people pay attention to her and she loses the label of an actress.
What is Richard Dyers theory and the two paradoxes? Dyers theory is that the term 'star' refers to the semi mythological set of meanings contructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience. Dyer made a list of values that are common of 'stars'. -Youthfulness -Rebellion -Sexual Magnetism - An anti-authoritarian attitude -Originality -Creativity/Talent -Aggression/Anger -A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex and good behaviour. - Conspicuous consumption, of sex, drugs and material goods - Success against the odds. another element o Dyers star theory is that a star is an image not a real person that is constructed out of a range of materials. Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings. Stars depend upon a range of subsidiary media- Magazines, TV, Radio, the Internet- in order to construct an image which can be marketed to their target audience. The star image is made up of a range of meanings which are attractive to the target audiences. The star image is coherent incomplete and open. The star image is based upon two paradoxes: Paradox one The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer. Paradox two The star must be simultaneouslypresent
and absent for the consumer
Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus-Party in the USA, this video shows the way that Miley Cyrus used to be like. In this video she is following typical conventions of a pop star such as performing her song and following elements of Goodwins theory such as inter textual references when she name drops artists and that their songs are 'on' in the song. The purpose of doing this is to gain a larger audience, as when the song is played and fans of other artists hear their favourite artists names on the song they might be more likely to listen to Miley Cyrus too. Another element of Goodwins theory that she meets on this is that there are lots of close ups of the artist, this is usually a demand set by their record label, the purpose of this is to gain the artist a larger audience and for her brand and face to become recognisable. Again another element of Goodwins theory is used in this video, for example there is a link between the lyrics and the visuals, this is seen with the American flags and the Lyrics about a 'party in the USA'. The artists image in this video is normal as she is still being conventional to her genre of music and following typical conventions of that genre in her music videos.
Miley Cyrus-Can't be tamed. This video is
Miley Cyrus-We can't stop. This video shows that she has changed her style and her character, from how she used to be normal and follow conventions that are expected of teen stars such as making videos that please her target audience which this video doesn't for some as they don't like the way she acts and how drastically she changed from her old character. Goodwins theory is used in this video with the sexualisation of the female body, this is seen during most of the video with her dancing and choice of clothes, this might have been included to show her target audience that she is more grown up, especially as this is one of her first videos that really showed the changes she has made to her appearence. Goodwins theory is used again with the reltionship between the lyrics and the visuals, for example the lyrics say 'its our party we do what we want' and then they are shown to be acting in a rebellious manor, Miley Cyrus might have chosen to include this in her video as it is showing her audience that she is this new adult un-responsible person. This would benifit her as she is trying to attract a new audience, that might enjoy this side of her better.
Genre and generic conventions – What is the genre of this artists and the three videos analysed. Is it conventional?
The genre of Miley Cyrus is generally Pop although she has appeared on some Hip-Hop songs more recently. The three videos that I looked at were pop songs as they used pop conventions such as a catchy chorus. This is conventional to the artist although it is the way that she now acts and the songs which are different than what she used to be like, but the genre of music is the same as before.
The artist
Target audience – Who is the artist’s target audience at each stage? Has it changed/stayed the same? Why do you think that is?
Her target audience when this video was released was typically children and young teenagers for party in the USA, it has since changed from the Wrecking ball and We cant stop videos as they were made to attract an older audience especially with conventions such as promiscuous dancing and swearing in the lyrics of the songs. The target audience that Miley Cyrus once had would have now grown older and maybe changes their preferences of music to music that Miley Cyrus now makes, so what Miley Cyrus has done is keep relevant to her loyal audience and keep them happy with her music, this now means that she no longer targets a child and young teenager audience and a more older teenager and young adult audience.
Messages and values in the music video and also of the time – What messages/values is artist portraying? Have they changed? Why is that? Is it in accordance with the era?
The messages and values that Miley Cyrus shows in her videos has changed massively over the years, this is evident from her lyrics in her videos which used to be about enjoying her self and having party's now they are more serious, such as relationships and adult themes like drugs and rebellion. This could be due to her growing up, or her being told by her record label to change her style to be more relevant to current conventions in the Pop genre such as rebellion and drugs, which are also pat of the Hip-Hop and rap genres which Miley Cyrus has appeared in some songs from. This makes her change in accordance with the era of music she is working in and to become successful she knows that she needs to follow popular conventions.
Summary - on the main points that you have identified, explaining why you think the artist made certain choices and decisions to reinvent their image and their career.
In summary, Miley Cyrus has changed her appearance and style to fit into conventions of the current era and to gain a larger target audience and bigger following of fans, this level of fame for her could have died out if she carried on making songs that her old target audience liked as they were also growing up so the music wouldn't be sustainable for her as the music wouldn't have a audience. This is why I believe that Miley Cyrus decided to change her appearance and style, to become more popular. Which has allowed her to re invent her career, and get more fans than before.
Explain how your research will help you to decide on an artist and also discuss why it is important to identify and maintain a target audience.
This research that I have carried out on Miley Cyrus will help me decide on an artist to make a video for as it has shown me how important the appearance of an artist and videos they make are. As the target audience need to be entertained. It is important to identify a target audience as that is who you are making the video for, so the conventions of the music genre and artists they listen to need to be looked at and met in certain ways so the music video is relevant to them and the genre we will choose. It is important to maintain the target audience that the artists has as re-inventing you're self to get a different target audience is risky and doesn't always work, so maintaining a target audience is a good options as they will b loyal to you.
Using
your analysis of a star task answer the
Following questions:
How does the video
represent theartist? The first video before she changed representsd the artists as a normal star that wants to party and enjoy herself with her friends, she followed typical pop conventions at this time. But in the more recent videos, she has completely changed from her old self and the videos represnt her in a different way to different audiences, for example older audiences that arent her target audience might be put off of her music by her actions in her music video. But her target audience might like her new style, so her change has been worthwhile for her as she is gaining publicity with her new edgy style and a larger following of fans.
Can the artist be
viewed as a product?
The artist can be viewed as a product in some ways as she is playing up to her stereotypes in the wrecking ball video of being outrageous and different to others in her genre, and she is also playing up to typical Goodwin's theory conventions and points from Dyers theory such asshowing a anti-autharoitarian attitude, and showing some sexual magnetism along with other points of Dyers star theory.
Is the artist both ordinary and extraordinary?
I would say that Miley Cyrus can be seen as ordinary and extraordinary, for example she shows some signs of being ordinary within her videos, this is seen sometimes when she sings about normal themes of her genre and life in genreal such as love, pain, enjoying herself and adult themes, apart from this she is mostly seen as extraordinary as she acts in a different way from normal people in her music videos, and this would be seen as strange to normal people if it happened in public, so this shows her to be extraordinary.
Do the videos place fans for or against hegemony?
The videos place fans for hegemony as Miley Cyrus talks about serious themes in her songs such as drugs and sex. She also references popular themes in society in her songs, and her audience like the artist and person that Miley Cyrus is so they respect her opinions, and the way she acts, the way that Miley Cryus is possibly going to try to be re-inacted by her fans, as they are influenced by her. And as a result if enough people follow her actions then t will be a normal thing to do in society such as act in a overly sexual way and dress like her.
You need to: 1) Change either Wrecking Ball or We Can't Stop to something like 'Can't be Tamed'- the other two are from the same transition point in her career so show no change 2) Apply Goodwin's and Dyer's theory to each video throughout the analysis 3) Talk about who the target audience is for each video and how they have changed over time 4) Explain the messages and value of each video and how they have changed over time 5) Use micro-elements to support points made about generic conventions etc. 6) Analyse video by video rather than point by point as it is unclear what video you are referring to throughout 7) Include a conclusion stating how this research has helped you understand the importance of an artist's image and helped you decide on your artist and target audience
Introduction- How do music videos appeal to an audience?
Music videos appeal to an audience as they show the fans of the artists perform the song they like, also there may be an element of narrative or concept involved which would keep the audience entertained. different genres would have different types of music videos for example rock music would use low-key lighting and dark costumes and maybe an unusual dark concept to the video, as this is what appeals to the fans of rock music. The way that artists are represented in music videos is in a way that their fans like as they are always portrayed in a positive way, for example they might be made to look cool. I will be discussing three different genres and the music videos that they have.
Rap analysis- Drake- Over
This is a rap song by Drake and the artist makes songs that are about his own personal experiences like breakup in relationships and his career.
This video is mainly performance based and it has some elements of narrative, in the video there is a girl who is supposed to be his ex-girlfriend, the producer of this video purposely made this female to appear to be voyeuristic and sexual, this is seen in the narrative parts of the video and when drake is performing and she is in the background. This girl was included in the video to show the audience that he is performing a song about relationships and he is trying to tell a story about his life and the girl would have been part of that.
Lighting is used in this video to bring attention to the way that the artist is feeling for example strobe lighting and low key lighting are both used in this video at different points, which helps improve the experience of the video for the audience as they are aware of changes in lighting and also scenery, this also matches about the change that he is rapping about. Low key lighting is used to add sad emotions to the video as he is rapping about a sad time in his life in the song and the low key lighting matches the darkness in his life.
Editing was used in the making of this video specifically the added colour effects oer the top of the shots, for example a red tint is often used, and the colour red is associated with anger or love, which are both themes that are in his lyrics. This use of adding colour tints to the video has a positive effect on the audience as they are engaged with the video and the lyrics he is rapping.
Cinematography is used throughout this video with the use of close up shots and a range of different camera angles, this relates to Goodwin's theory which includes tat the artists use close up shots so they are marketable and recognised that they are popular. There is also a use of high angle shots which make the artist appear to be small, this could be linking the lyrics to the individuals when he speaks about being upset or annoyed, this would make him weaker in the eyes of the audience as he isn't in control of his feelings of life.
The clothes that drake wears in this video also relate to the lyrics as when he is at home he is wearing comfortable clothes and then when the background changes and the lyrics change and become more serious then his clothes change into more smart clothes this shows the audience that it is a new part of the story.
Dance analysis- Flo Rida- Club Can't Handle Me
The song Club cant handle me is a dance song made by Flo-Rida and David Guetta who is a famous DJ and producer of dance music.
This music video uses elements that are conventional in a lot of dance music videos, and that is a crowd at a night club, women dancing and the artists being made to look cool for the video. This song is made to be played in nightclubs so the lyrics are about clubs and having fun which is conventional for the dance genre.
Low key lighting is used to create a lively atmosphere of a nightclub and add a more exciting element to the video, the low key lighting is seen through out, this is used to create the atmosphere of a nightclub for the audience and when there is a dance battle it makes it seem more fun for the audience as the dancers have the spotlight on them only.
The editing styles used in this video are conventional to the genre as they are fast paced and go with the song, which is part of Goodwins theory, the audience would like the editing styles as they make the music video exciting.
There is a use of Mise-En-Scene in this video, as the artists choose to wear clothes that they feel would impress the audience and keep up their public image of being rich, this is seen with designer clothes and gold chains that make the artist look rich.
This video is about showing the audience what a fun time the artists have when at a nightclub and the lifestyle they have, this is why the song is called 'the club cant handle me'. There is a use of iconography with the clothes that Flo-Rida wears and the drinks he is drinking and the cars in the video, it is included to show the audience his lifestyle.
The video uses alot of close ups of the artists this is so they are recognised as artists and this will make them more money, this is important for record labels, the profile of the artist is also manipulated by the low angle shots of him to make him look bigger and more powerful that he might actually be.
The editing used in this video is lie other videos of the same gene, that includes lots of fast aced shots of the club and different people enjoying themselves, this is to make the music video as lively as the song.
Different analysis- Biffy Clyro- Black chandelier (rock)
Black chandelier by the rock band Biffy Clyro is a very popular song of theirs the video feature mostly the band performing and they are using their instruments, there is also parts of the video that are concept based and narrative based.
Iconography is used in this music video to show their fans that they are talented musicians that can all play instruments like guitar or drums, the inclusion of this in the video will help the band be recognised as talented and people will respect their music. This also benefits the brand of the band and this is a important part of music videos for record labels, as they make more money from them selling songs and albums.
Camera shots that are used in this video are typical of the rock genre as they are mostly mid shots to show the audience the artists performing the song, this relates back to the record label and them wanting the video to be made to show their artists as talented and good, so they make more money.
Low key lighting is used in this video most of the way through, and it is also conventional of the rock genre as they want to be seen as edgy and current, the low key lighting allows them to remain a bit undercover, for example this darkness is used when the artists are performing it makes them seem like a darker and more edgy band this is what the aim of the video is, to show the audience what the band want the audience to see and that is them being different and edgy. The low key lighting also benefits the band as they want to be seen to be conventional of the rock genre, and that is what most bands that make rock music do for their music videos they choose to conform to the conventions as it is the genre of music they make and the genre of music that their audience listen to.
Timing of shots, the timing of shots is relatively slow paced for a rock music video, this is not the whole way through the video but most of the video has slow timing of shots, this may be due to the song being made at a slow tempo , it helps the video and the song match together and this makes for a better experience for the audience.
Clothing, the clothing in this music video is not very typical of the rock genre, this is as they decided to not wear clothes on the top half of their body and only trousers, this is seen when the band are performing. The band might have chosen to do this to go against the conventional outfits that people wear for rock music videos, rock bands usually wear leather jackets and other clothes that are conventional to the rock genre, by not wearing conventional clothes it makes the video more memorable for fans, as it is distinguishable against other rock music videos.
Summary.
Overall the music videos are very different for example the editing in the three videos are different, the editing for the Drake video is slower with some faster parts, the Flo Rida editing styles are faster which helps catch the excitement of the club scene and the dancing, the Biffy Clyro editing styles are normal speed with mostly slow being used. The editing styles in each video helps the video fit the specific conventions of the genre they are in, such as faster editing for the Flo Rida video which the fast paced editing suits the club scene and is also genre conventional. Using the conventions from the different editing styles and cinematography styles the artists make their videos with what they feel best represents them and would appeal to their audience for example if the song is slow they would make a slow video, this would be liked by the fans as they would expect as slow video for the slow song.
The audience and artist build a relationship as they are making music the fans like and the videos give the artists a chance to show the fans what they are like, the fans see this through the music videos and is what makes them like the artist.
For our own music video we might use some of the editing styles as they are both songs from similar genres, which means the conventions are also similar, I feel this would benefit our music video as it would help to attract the audience that like the rock genre.
Another element that I would consider implementing into our own music video is the lighting styles, I feel that they add a good atmosphere to the music video and improve the quality of the music video especially the narrative.
Summary-
* How do the technical elements vary in the different music videos? (Relate to the generic conventions and detailed examples)
* How do music videos appeal to an audience?
* How can the audience build a relationship with the artist?
* What ideas or inspirations can you use for your music video and why?
Introduction. There are different ways to make a music video unique many artists simple do this by not following typical conventions that other music videos follow, this is also Goodwins theory of music videos, what most pop artist use as a guide when making their videos. diverse music videos usually miss out different parts of Goodwins theory like lyrics matching the images on screen, this is the case for videos that are concept based. Chris Cunningham is a British video artist he is very popular in ambient music genre and has worked with artists in that genre such as Aphex twin and Autechre. He has also worked with Madonna on her music video for the song 'frozen'. He is quite controversial to people that are not used to his abstract style videos, but he is recognised as being talented at what he does and has won some awards. Some people don't understand the style of music video he makes as it can be very concept based which isn't typical of pop music and his style is described as Gothic by some. For example in the music video for 'frozen' by Madonna it is performance and concept based and the setting is in a desert, and she is dressed in black, the song is also quite dark, which goes against her usual style of music videos and songs, that usually follow the upbeat pop conventions. This type of music video is not the type of video that would be played on music channels as it is maybe seen as too far from the normal music video and the large audience that music channels have wouldn't like the videos he makes, especially The video for 'come to daddy' by Aphex twin which is quite violent and younger audiences might find it disturbing because of how strange it is.
Window licker- Aphex twin. A video made by Chris Cunningham.
This video is a very diverse music video, it is not conventional to the pop genre, and the genre of the song is electronic, this still doesn't follow typical conventions of the electronic genre either. The video is diverse as it has a strange narrative and strong elements of concept.
Come to Daddy- Aphex twin. A video made by Chris Cuinningham.
Again this video is made by Chris Cunningham and is very diverse, Apex twin are the artists that made this music video too, as with the Window Licker music video, it doesn't follow any pop conventions or the conventions of the electronic genre of which it is part of, it also has strong narrative and concept elements which make the video diverse. The fans of the artist will expect this diverse style video and this will get them support from the fans, where as a larger audience that are no part of their target audience wouldn't understand the videos and wouldn't like them as they are too diverse.
Micheal Gondry is a 51 year old french music video director, and he is popular for his manipulation of Mise-En-Scene and has won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He has worked with many artists across lots of genres for example he has worked with Kylie Minogue,Daft Punk, The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers, The Vines, Steriogram, Radiohead, and Beck.
Micheal Gondry made the music video for the White Stripes video 'Hardest button to press', this video features some conventions of Goodwins theory such as music instruments, music matching the lyrics, and a lot of close ups of the artists. This might be quite conventional for music videos but the style of this video is different as it is not showing the artists social status in the video like other bands in the rock genre do, for example in other rock videos the band are shown performing on stage in front of their fans, or fans chasing them down a street, which shows their audience that they are popular artists. This isn't the case in this video, the band are more relateable for their audience as they are in public performing, this is more relateable for the audience. Micheal Gondry made the music video for Kylie Minogue and her song 'Come in to my world' which is again un-glamorous for a major popstar like her, as she is in the streets with normal people, and she is shown to be like them. Like the white stripes video, there are elements of Goodwins theory for example she is singing the song for the whole video, which is matching music to the images on screen, and there are also alto of close up shots of the artist. The video is performance and concept based, and the concept is that there are many 'clones' of her on the streets and she does the same thing over and over, but each version of her does something different. This is why the video is unlike other pop videos of the artist looking glamourous and performing her song and shown as a huge popstar, when she is shown as a normal person in this video.
Kylie Minogue- Come in to my world. Video made by Micheal Gondry.
This music video has elements of performance, narrative and concept, it is not conforming to typical conventions of the pop genre, as pop music videos typically are solely performance based with some narrative, where as this video is more diverse and has a range of three elements. The fans of the artist wouldn't like this style of video as it is too different to the artists other videos, but this video might attract and audience that doesn't typically like pop videos so would like this video more as it doesn't follow the pop conventions.
White Stripes- Hardest button to press. Video made by Micheal Gondry.
This video has elemnts of performance throughout, with the concept being important and little narrative, the conventions of the rock genre typically show the band playing in a secluded location or at a gig, this video is different as it has a concept including the artists while they perform. This video would be liked by all audience as it isn't typical of the genre which some might dislike, but it still follows some conventions and adds a good concept which the larger audience would like.
Cunningham and Gondry are two very different video producers, and the style of their videos are different and the music they make videos for are also different. Apart from that they are similar in that they use some elements of Goodwins theory but still manage to make a diverse videos, they are also similar in that they both use editing software to their advantage, Gondry does by making the artists and other props like instruments appear more than once in the same shot which is vital in his video for the White Stripes, and Cunningham uses editing when there is a long car in the Aphex twin- Window licker video, and also the face that appears in the TV screen in the Come to daddy video. The benefit of working with a video director like Chris Cunningham is that there is a chance that the video will get lots of publicity. This is up to the artist to decide if they want to change possibly change their style to make a diverse music video with him. The benefit of working with working with Gondry to make their video is that there is a strong chance that the video will be played on the top 40 charts and music channels, as the videos are not extremely diverse like Chris Cunningham's videos. Also when working with Gondry the video would still be recognised as diverse which would be popular with fans as they are being creative, which is good for the artist.
The positives of making a diverse music videos are that the video will get lots of publicity, this will help the artists grow and make more money and become more successful, also the diverse music videos will give the artist a representation which could also be a positive thing, as audiences would either like the music videos made by the band, which would get them fans and more money, or not like the style of music video which might make the audience turn people against it, this would till generate publicity for the music video which is important for the bands.
Introduction- What is censorship? Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other such entities. For example music channels and radio stations have rules and regulations set by Ofcom who control British media and have a duty to protect the public from harmful or offencive material, this means that the radio stations and music channels would have to make sure there isn't any harmful language used in any music they play, if the music is harmful they must block out the harmful language this is censorship.
This post will show different opinions and ideas that groups of people who listen to music have on censorship, for example I will be discussing the points made by music artists and parents that are for the use of censorship in music.
Artists- The general view of artists on censorship is a negative one, many belive that their music should be played to the public as it was made, and that people that agree with censorship simply shouldn't listen to the music if it offends them. Freemuse is an independent membership organisation advocating and defending freedom of expression for musicians and composers worldwide. This organisation is against censorship of music and was set up by musicians who feel the same way. This shows how musicians feel about the censorship of their music and how they feel that it is a human right to be able to express themselves through their music. Artists do not feel responsible for parents being upset with the sometimes explicit nature of their music and they feel it should be their responsibility to stop their children listening to it if they feel that way.
Record labels- Record labels do not tend to have a strong opinion of the censorship of their artists music, for example they feel that if their artists can make more money if their song is censored on the radio then they should just censor the song, this gives them a larger audience for their artists. But music labels do not force their artists to make music that isn't explicit or offencive as they do not want to put people who like the raw material of their artists to be put off of them.
Parents for censorship- Parents that are for the censorship of music on radios and music channels belive that they shouldn't have to worry about their child being exposed to this language and that it should be the duty of care to all listeners that radio stations censor the offencive language before the watershed. Also another belief by parents is that artists should see themselves as role models to children that may be impressionable to bad language, and that they should consider that using bad language in their music isn't always necessary. Censorship stops parents being worried about listening to the radio in case of swearing and lets them and their child enjoy artists music without being offended by bad language.
Parents against censorship- parents that are against censorship feel that people who want to listen to music should be allowed to at their own will, and that parents should be competent enough to teach their child that offencive language isn't acceptable to use, they also feel that it is very hard to stop children from listening to offencive music if they really want to anyway, as children are getting better at a younger age when using the Internet where uncensored music is widely available. Many parents also feel that uncensored music wouldn't have an adverse effect on the behaviour of children anyway especially as some children are exposed to bad language at home or in public.
Fans of the artists- The wide majority of fans feel that music should be played as the artists intended it to be, so without censorship, they feel this way because they have come to like the artists music without censorship, and they want more people to enjoy the same artist as them, and if the only music potential new fans can listen to is censored music then they might not become a fan of the artist.
Music channels- Music channels a very strict about keeping to the rules that Ofcom set for them, for example they censor music that has explicit language in it, and they do it until the 9pm watershed. Some music channels feel that music shouldn't have to be censored but they all keep to the rules as they don't want to lose audiences and money.
Radio channels- Like many music channels popular radio stations are for censorship of music as they feel that it will protect the general public from unnecessarily hearing bad language, this will also give them a larger audience as parents know its safe to listen to these radio stations with their children. Radio stations still keep to the 9pm watershed and some specifically play music that contains explicit language, this keeps all listeners happy with the radio stations as they are reaching a balance between censored and uncensored music.
Conclusion-
In conclusion I feel that the way music is censored in today's society is very adequate, as it allows a balance for censored and uncensored music, so people for and against are happy when listening to music. This balance is achieved with the use of the watershed, this allows people to know that explicit music is going to be played, and people who don't want to listen, do not listen to it, and those that like explicit music listen after 9 PM. The debate about weather explicit music is harmful or not isn't relevant as some parents simply do not want their children to be exposed to explicit language weather it is harmful to them or not.
