Planning setting and iconography- Miss Georgiou

.Introduction-
Locations and iconography are very important elements in a music video as they engage the audience with the change of locations or if the locations are relate able for the audience then they will feel more engaged in the music video. Locations are particularly important as they go with the narrative of the music video and if the location doesn't go with the narrative then  the narrative could loose its engaging effect on the audience as they will be confused as to why the character in the music video is in the location that doesn't have any relation to the lyrics.

The locations that we are planning on using for our music video are Canary Warf London, Liverpool Street London, Docklands London and a house.
We have chosen prominent locations in London for our music video as the audience might be able to relate to the as they have been there themselves or they recognise them. This will help engage our audience in our music video as they will be interested in why the artist is in these locations. This isn't conventional to our genre as music videos in our genre don't utilise recognisable locations, this can often dis-engage the audience and the relationship between the audience and the artist isn't as strong.

House,
We have chosen to use this location as it is relate-able for the audience, as they can relate it to their own home, and also it shows the audience that the artist live a normal life in this video narrative as the house we are using is normal, this will engage the audience more as they will be able to relate with the artists more. The house will be used in the opening scene of the music video which has an argument take place between the artist and his partner. This location doesn't limit what what we could film as we needed a smaller house to make the video relate-able for the audience so the house we are using is perfect. There will be no health and safety issues in the house as it will be one of our own houses that will only have us filming in, this greatly reduces any risk that could come with filming. As the house is inside the weather will have no effect on the filing of the music video. The house will relate to the relationship throughout the video as there will be flashbacks of scenes of the relationship in the house, this could lead to the house being the symbol for their relationship.

Train stations,
We are using train stations as they help the narrative flow between scenes as they artist goes from one location to London, we need to show the train station to make it clear to the audience he traveled to a different location. We will be showing our character walk through the ticket barrier at the train station. The train station scenes are busy so will relate to the lyrics as the lyrics imply he is lonely, the amount of people around him that don't know him or speak to him will show the audience how lonely he is and this will help build the relationship between the audience and the artist.
The heath and safety risks at a train station is that there are people that don't know we are filming so we need to keep our tripod and camera away from people who might fall over or trip over it.

For all locations outside the house the following are health and safety concerns,
Tripping Hazards, these are hazards on the floor that we need to look out for. To overcome this we need to look out for any hazards. This will reduce the risk of tripping over any objects.

Equipment risks, the equipment we use could be hazardous to other people as they might not see the equipment and they could walk or run into it which would break the equipment and potentially hurt the other person, to reduce this risk we would stay out of the way of main walk ways when filming our shots and also stand next to our equipment to prevent people walking into it.

Water and rain  when filming our music video is a hazard we need to prevent from causing our filming problems, it could lead to slipping over and hurting ourselves or potentially damaging equipment. to prevent this risk we will not film when there is a risk of risking health and safety.

Iconography-
We will use a phone as iconography in our music video this will be used by our artist. This could have an implied meaning of the artists using his phone to text his ex partner or check up on her. This adds to the narrative and helps build the relationship between the artists and the audience making them more engaged in the music video.

 Pill.
We are using a pill as iconography for implied drug use by our artists, we feel that this will allow the narrative to be engaging and the use of filters like the kaleidoscope filter will be effective after the use of drugs. This iconography is conventional for our genre.

Oyster card.
We are using an oyster card as iconography when our artist walks into the train station this will show that he is travelling by train, and it is another element to the narrative for the audience to take in.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. You have considered the purpose of locations well and have focused on the effect that you will want to create, but further discussion of how it follows the codes and conventions of your chosen music genre is needed.

Now you need to relate your explanations back to your lyrics, to demonstrate further understanding of why you have selected to use certain locations in your production.
